Modifying the physical environment
When a child is first born, there aren't many arrangements that need to be made in order to ensure that the house is the safe and that the child is not put in danger. It is only when the child begins to crawl and walk that modifications should be made however, it is easier to have these prepared before to ensure they are accurately set up. Modifying the environment will lower the chances of the child sustaining severe injuries and will allow them to play freely without having to repeatedly move them out of harms way.
Modifications that should be made include;
- purchasing furniture such as a cot, baby bouncer and change table
- installing safety gates to reduce the chances of your child falling down the stairs or going outside
- removing cords that are in reach of children reduces the chance of your child being electrocuted or harmed
- putting covers over pointy edges (such as the corner of a coffee table) reduces the chances of your child falling onto them and injuring themselves
By successfully modifying the house and ensuring your child's safety, the risk of them being put in harms way is very limited and as a parent, you are satisfying their need of being in an environment that is safe and secure.
