Building a positive relationship with the child
Being a parent is not always easy and as children grow older, not only do their needs begin to change, but so do their personalities and it is important as a parent to be able to have a positive and healthy relationship with them.
There are many ways in which a parent can build and maintain their relationship with their child from a young age and right throughout their life.
These include:
- Bonding
Finding out what your child is interested in is always the first step to great bonding. Asking your child what interests them and what they like doing makes them feel as though you are interested in their life and want to build a relationship with them. Once finding out what they like, you can start doing those things with them hence creating a stronger relationship with them.
- Understanding and patience
Sometimes it can become a little tough when your child does the wrong thing and usually, the first reaction a parent has is to scream or punish them. By doing this, the child feels as though you do not understand them and will want to distance themselves away rather than become closer. If your child does do the wrong thing, you should sit down and explain to them exactly what they did wrong and why you think it is wrong. This way, your child will realise that you have their best interest at heart and hence will not distance themselves away from you.
- Prioritising time and showing interest
As a parent, there are many things that one is involved in. Between work, meetings and socialising, it is difficult to find the time to spend with your child. However, neglecting that time isn't the way one should show their child that they love and care for them. If a child feels as though their parent isn't interested in what they do and barely has time for them, they're only going to distance themselves and make it harder for you to build a positive relationship. However, by prioritising and allocating time to spend with your child, not only will you create a stronger relationship with them, but you'll also be showing them that they are one of your priorities and you value spending time with them, giving room for a positive relationship to begin.
